JBoss 5.0 will come ...in next several quarters
The announcement starts with: "Red Hat has committed to delivering the delayed next edition of JBoss
in the "next several" quarters, promising the wait will be worth it." You can read the whole story here. Although "next several" quarters is a little bit undefined - I'm already looking forward to try it out - it will fully support Java EE 5. A beta is already available, however it has still some problems (like locking deployment-archives on windows, so you will have to restart the server after every deployment, dependency injection between web tier and EJBs works not always as expected). However I used JBoss in production since 1.0/2.0 versions and it was always "cutting edge".
Meanwhile you can try glassfish. It is production ready. Come to Jazoon, I will give a session "Glassfish V2/V3 - the killer appserver for development and production" - as you see I'm totally unbiased :-).

Web 3.5 Arrival or Applets Rocks With Java 6 Update 10 - an 3D, AJAX, Applet Hybrid
I just tested some "old" applets with Firefox 3.0 and JDK 1.6 u10 (on Vista) - and I'm really impressed. I tested the Iris applet again - 3D photo viewing (3 D slideshow), editing, managing, application. It works smoothly, the initialization is relatively fast (about 20 seconds). Iris is a HTML, Ajax, Applet hybrid with remarkable capabilities (drag and drop from desktop, file upload). After start, just use a flickr name like "romainguy". I heard about some problems on Macs (NoClassDefFoundError) with this application - but who cares about it :-).
