Some intentions are documented here.

Too bad they don't really say anything concrete about NetBeans, unlike the other products. "Everyone is free to use whatever they like" sounds very much like marketing-language for "we're not going to do anything with it"...

It doesn't sound good for Netbeans, I must say. On other items they say that they will add more development resources, but for Netbeans the language is more vague.

Interesting is also the "disclaimer" at the end of document:

"The preceding is intended to outline our general product direction. It is intended for information purposes only, and may not be incorporated into any contract. It is not a commitment to deliver any material, code, or functionality, and should not be relied upon in making purchasing decisions. The development, release, and timing of any features or functionality described for Oracle’s products remains at the sole discretion of Oracle."

There is no commitment in the FAQ what so ever and once the purchase is carried through they can change plan for any of the products.

I think that if products such as NetBeans eventually lose their support from Oracle, then it is in the best interests and abilities of the Open Source Community to continue working on their development. After all, they did start up as unfunded initiatives, didn't they? So why not continue working on them in the same way. Remember: "Open Source Matters".
