Interesting stats. Is Java already ubiquitous on the client?

No, and not even close to Flash

Sun has agreements with the top 10 computer manufactures and they install Java on every Windows machine. Even my mom and Grandpa have Java. I think Java penetration is pretty close to Flash. Somewhere I read numbers like 70% - 80%, which isn't the 95% of Flash but it is still significant.
Part of the reason the new applet plugin was done in Update 10 instead of Java 7 is so that computer manufactures would not have to re-certify a new version of the JRE. Plus, all of the existing computers with Java 6 will pick up the updates. When Java 7 comes out, I don't think you'll be able to upgrade using the auto updater.
